Independent Drawing
Figures in space
Since recently getting my ADHD/AD diagnosis, it
had brought reasoning and validation to why I felt certain ways in specific
situations. My mental health and spirituality have been a focus of my art
recently, whether its directly focused on a situation dealing with my
experience of reality or creating something that’s purpose is to help soothe or
calm what is going on in my mind.
Additionally, I am going through am
uncomfortable situation with my housemate that has amped up my feelings of
anxiety and feeling out of place in my own home. Due to that unsafe feeling, I
have been staying over at my boyfriends. I realized that his house and
housemates have been a space or people where I have always felt comfortable to
be myself since they moved here 4 years prior. Most of the boys who live here
are also homebody type people and originally, I planned to draw some of the
boys in their home compared to a space that wasn’t as comfortable—such as a
bar. After completing the first two drawings of Canon and Cameron relaxing in
their home I decided to keep with the figures in spaces where they were
comfortable, specifically hoping their body language can tell you about they
feel in that space and the feeling of the space itself.
The focus of the drawings is the figures body language but I also wanted the viewer to get a feeling of the energy of the space (inside and outside) so I chose to use brown paper for inside and white for figures sitting outside. The drawings consist of four specific roommates on 18 x 24” brown or white paper and one final 24 x 36” brown paper including multiple figures sitting in the living room. Choosing charcoal as my medium was more of a personal connection between material and the feeling of comfort. Since I’m most comfortable with charcoal I feel like that reflects the message I’m thinking about while also having a soft quality that the viewer can feel.
