Sculpture Assignment I
Working with Wood
While thinking about my first interaction with sculpture making I knew I wanted to create something that was playful for myself and the viewer. I personally enjoy seeing forms made of materials that are known to be quite stiff or harsh in a soft or rounded way without losing some of its original essence. I also very much enjoy pieces that hold themselves up and incorporate funky shapes of negative space. With those 'likes' in mind I drew some sketches and got and idea to use four separate degrees of cuts from the ends to the middle (45, 60, 75, and 90 degree cut in the middle) each about a foot long. I knew combining mismatch degrees would create obtuse angles, thinking about line to create movement, then connecting the three separate pieces to create a standing form that has interesting negative space from whatever angle it is looked at. To incorporate the manipulation of an already stiff material into a more soft moving line I created pockets in the wood for screws to connect each foot long piece and have the screw disappear, I rounded off the meeting corners/angles so they are seamless, and finally used dowels to re-fill those screw pockets, cut, glued, and sanded them flush with the original piece of wood.
